This second Palio race, after the one on 2 July, is an unmissable event for anyone visiting Tuscany in August. Palio of 16 August, also known as the Palio dell’Assunta, is one of the most spectacular and heartfelt events in the city of Siena. It takes place every year on 16 August in honour of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a day that for the people of Siena is full of tradition, faith and passion. A special spectacle where a competition between the historic contrade can be observed. The winning contrada celebrates with great enthusiasm and pride. The festival can last for weeks, with dinners and celebrations involving the entire community. To secure a good seat, it is advisable to arrive at the Piazza del Campo several hours before the start of the race. While access to the centre of the square is free, seats in the grandstands and surrounding buildings require the purchase of tickets, which can be purchased in advance.
